Exhibition Tom Liekens

08 February 2013 — 11 April 2013

In recent years, Liekens has been working on a series of large, panoramic paintings integrating numerous cultural references within a new context. Through the use of everyday objects, the paintings evoke a certain familiarity at first sight, which quickly makes way for a pervasive sense of unease and alienation. He makes regular use of decorative elements such as stencils, gold leaf and silver, which lend his work a deliberately artificial and contrived nature.
In the summer of 2007, he accompanied a scientific expedition to Spitsbergen near the North Pole, and in the autumn of the same year, he was artist in residence for one month in Tianjin, China. Both trips inspired the creation of several paintings.
